"Oh Bless! You all are my life line. Truly. Everyday I connect with you all." -- Simone child - age 7 years
Now what do we do?
Heavy metal poisoning is found in children with developmental conditions like, ADHD, Autism, PDD-NOS, Aspergers, Apraxia/Dyspraxia as well as those with mood disorders or other health problems. Many children who have had mercury exposure are also toxic in other heavy metals such as Lead, Aluminum, Arsenic, and Antimony because mercury inhibits their excretion.
A basic inexpensive and non-invasive way of looking for heavy metals is with a Hair Elements Test. This will show what metals your body has excreted over the past three months, as well as various minerals. Mercury can be very obvious on the tests, however, more often it 'hides'. In order to interpret these tests you have to look for the effect of mercury. Mercury interferes with normal mineral transport. Andrew Hall Cutler, PhD has worked extensively with these tests to establish reliable values for the essential minerals. Hair test interpretation involves looking at the arrangement of these essential minerals, as well as the toxic metals. Dr. Cutler has standardized a method of reading the essential minerals which he calls the "counting rules" . This test can also be helpful in demonstrating adrenal function, thyroid function, and malabsorption issues. The coaches at Autism Recovery Center have extensive experience applying the 'counting rules' according to Dr. Cutler as well as finding other health clues in these tests. A French Urine Porphyrin Test is also a medically recognized way to confirm mercury. Elevated porphyrins occur when there is mercury in the body causing blood cells to spill porphyrins into the urine. There are specific porphryins that spill for mercury and certain ones for lead. We also have experience with reading these tests.
Some do something called a "Challenge Test" that involves giving a high dose of a chelator and collecting urine after. Often a high dose of DMSA is given by mouth followed by collecting urine to send to the lab. We have found these tests do not tell you how much metal you have, and often times they do not show mercury. When mercury is stored in the brain, it is not available for DMSA to remove it, as it does not enter the brain.
We DO NOT recommend doing "Heavy Metal Challenge Testing" due to the high doses used, and the risks associated with using a high one time dose of chelator. This causes metals to be stirred up and then redistributed in the brain. This test is not informative in determining the level of toxicity, it only confirms that metals are there, the risks of using the high doses far outweigh any benefit.
When testing is not available or is inconclusive you can look at symptoms and past known exposures to metals.
*Do you have a lot of odd health issues and none of them seem related? *Do you suffer medical problems that doctors cannot cure, but offer only symptom control? *Did you notice a change in health following a vaccine or dental work? *Are they developmental delays, regressions or a loss of skills? *Did you have any dental work done during pregnancy? *Was your child vaccinated? *Did/does your child have metal dental fillings? *Are you chemically sensitive (MCS)? *Do you suffer from any "syndrome", allergies, chronic fatigue, digestive ailments etc? *Has your child been diagnosed with a developmental disorder?
This is just a basic list of things to look for that may indicate you have been exposed to heavy metals that might be causing health or developmental problems for you or your child.
So now that we know it's metals what do we do?
Many people have heard the word chelation (key-lay-shun). This is the process of taking a substance that is known to bind to or remove metals to help get them out of your body. There are numerous protocols for this available, however the majority of them can be problematic. Some of the protocols are even dangerous, which is why so many medical professionals don't advise doing chelation. They have based this opinion on what they have seen happen in most of the high dose infrequent mainstream protocols in use. They have good reason to think this way, as those protocols do cause problems. Chelating improperly can cause you to become increasingly ill over time, sometimes causing irreversible problems. However, when done safely on a low dose protocol that considers the pharmacokinetics (the half-life) of the chelators, it is safe and effective. It can be difficult to find a medical professional who is trained in using the frequent low dose protocol, however, you can learn. We can help!
There are many products out there that claim to remove metals naturally and safely. We have found most of them to cause problems for those that have used them. They contain substances like chlorella, cilantro, or glutethione and are used on a random dosing protocol. The trouble with using these substances is they contribute to moving metals around rather than removing them entirely. This usually causes regressions at some point, or a worsening of mercury symptoms.
At Autism Recovery Center we provide information about a frequent low dose protocol that is based upon the length of time the chelators remain in the blood stream, and the weight of the person taking them. This concept is applied to many prescription medications every day. (Pharmokinetics) As an example; Pain relievers are dosed by age/weight and how long before they wear off.
In order to eliminate multiple redistribution periods during chelation, it is imperative to keep a steady level of chelator in the blood for a few days. This provides a steady metal removal, without the risk of metals going back into the brain and nervous system. This reduces or eliminates symptoms of discomfort and provides safety to prevent making your child .worse, as is seen in the other protocols.
In addition to this there are biomedical treatments that help address the damage heavy metals have caused in the body. As well as supportive supplements to help your child feel better and function better while you work on removing the metals. Removing metals like mercury is what leads to relieving the ailments that were caused by it. However, this must be done safely using a frequent low dose protocol.
The parent health coaches at Autism Recovery Center have a combined 15 years experience implementing this protocol with their own families as well as teaching others. We have helped hundreds of parents navigate their way through the various issues that arise from time to time when trying to make recovering our children fit seamlessly into life. We can do the same for you. Become a member now and let the healing begin.
